Project Learning
Course Description
Students learn about managing projects by working through real life activities such as running the school supplies store and other sponsor-based projects. Students will be exposed to project planning fundamentals including organizing and breaking down projects into activities and tasks that are completed in a specific time period. Students build a calendar of projects and events to practice executive functioning skills, task completion and time management.
Projects include assembly of products for the school gift store, organizing and planning items for the school supplies store, preparing mailings, packaging items for US troops overseas, setting up Learning Center events, and many other projects requested through the community.
Students at the novice level are exposed to the following life skills working in dyads or directly with a staff member:
- Practicing dyad work in cooperation with another student to complete tasks.
- Referencing adults to regulate actions and emotions.
- Organizing efficient and effective use of materials
- Using time to complete assigned task and clean up.
- Using visual images and tools to create efficient work space
- Practicing dyad work in cooperation with another student to complete tasks.
Students at the apprentice level are exposed to the following vocational and life skills working in small groups:
- Interpreting information on project requirements.
- Developing action plans with realistic timelines for completion.
- Organizing materials to stage and prioritizing tasks.
- Practicing good work ethics including behavior, collaboration, adaptability, flexibility, punctuality, reliability.
- Use executive functioning to anticipate and complete similar projects in the future.
- Analyze and determine improvements in efficiencies of cost, personnel, or other resources.
