Honoring the Dream: Part Two

The Monarch School has a longstanding commitment of inviting our students to attend school on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day for the purpose of honoring and learning about the message of this great leader. Last month we focused on Novice and Apprentice level activities, and this month are featuring Challenger and Voyager level students.

Mrs. Krause's social studies' classes took on projects to share with other students in five different station areas. Students listened to and enjoyed music from various countries in a cultural music presentation. They were able to contribute their musical thoughts with other members of the class.

Some students created a beautiful quilt, which featured diverse ethnic contributions to American society. In other stations, students learned about and discussed various civil rights leaders through Power Points, skits, readings, and even a student-created animated film!

Students also gave their time in service to the community, with some working off-campus at the “Feed the Children” organization, and others assisting in on campus community service with Mr. Klein.

The community ended this day of learning with a culturally diverse film choice of either Akeelah and the Bee or Secret Life of Bees, followed by reflection at a closing community meeting.
