Monarch Publication Due Out in September
An important part of the Monarch mission is to share what we have learned with the larger community. We do that through our diagnostic clinic, through workshops, consultations and seminars, and we just completed our first full length book! At the request of St. Mary’s Press, we have written “A Place for All: Ministry for Youth with Special Needs.” This collection of Monarch beliefs and practices adapted to religious education settings is a response to an urgent need in the religious community for help in modifying their environments, curriculum and teaching styles, so as to be able to truly say, “All are welcome!”
Bringing Social Thinking to More of the Community
Trip to Guatemala
Michelle Garcia Winner, author of Thinking About You Thinking About Me and Think Social (see also www.socialthinking.com), is widely regarded as one of the frontrunners of innovative programming for young people who experience difficulty in conceptualizing and responding to the thoughts and feelings of other people. Michelle’s fun and straightforward curriculum has been adopted by more and more practitioners over time to support development of theory of mind, and has been in use with modifications at the Apprentice Program of The Monarch School since 2003. Read more here. Apprentice Program Director Dr. Debrah Hall recently visited our friends at Colegio Monarch Guatemala. She was excited to visit the Colegio Monarch staff and deepen the bonds of friendship and professional collaboration the two schools share.

During a Friday Greenstones ceremony, Dr. Hall reported to Apprentice students that, even though they are very far apart, the two schools are a lot alike! Read more about Dr. Hall’s visit and other Apprentice stories here.

In 1953, President Eisenhower established Law Day. Law day is an important celebration sponsored by the Houston Bar Association to remind citizens about how important the rule of law is in every citizen’s everyday life. This year, Lauren Rainey’s essay was chosen for an honorable mention in the Houston Bar Association’s 2008 Law day Essay Contest. She received a certificate of achievement and a cash award. National Merit Scholar
Each year, 1.5 million junior year high school students sit down on one day in October and take the Preliminary Scholastic Assessment Test (PSAT). Out of that group of students, only 50,000 are named selected on the basis of their scores for the national Merit Scholarship program. This year, for the second year in a row, a Monarch student has been so selected, with a score in the top 96% of all students. Our congratulations to Matt Lurton, his family, and his teachers for this rare accomplishment.
