Monarch Students Interview Michael Phelps
Green Day
Olympic Swimming Superstar Michael Phelps is a hero to many of the students at The Monarch School. Having achieved such tremendous success in spite of having severe ADHD, Michael is an inspiration to our students, and they enjoyed asking Michael the following questions:

Zach: “How did you win the gold medals?”

Michael: “I won the gold medals with a lot of hard work and dedication. I also had a tremendous amount of support from my family, coach and friends. I couldn’t have done it by myself. There were times when I wanted to quit, but my goals got me back in the water. You have to Dream, Plan and Reach. That is the motto of my Foundation.”

Monarch students learned more about how to live green and design green by visiting the American Institute of Architects’Green Works” exhibit on
Dec. 11.

The exhibit included green designs submitted by leading architects across the city, including Monarch student designs related to the building of their new school, for which Monarch has applied for Silver level LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification through the U.S. Green Building Council. Passing on the Gift   Signs of Progress

Matt Lurton, last year’s National Merit Scholar, welcomes Robert Berno – this year’s National Merit qualifier to the growing list of Monarch students who have earned the prestigious academic achievement award. Each year, several million junior-year students take the qualifying test in school throughout the nation – and only the top 4% are nominated for National Merit status. We are proud of Robert, and Matt, and William, and David, all of whom have led the way for Monarch School. We are so grateful to the faculty and families who have supported achievement at this high level of accomplishment.

In keeping with Monarch’s efforts to achieve LEED certification in the new campus design and construction, the students of room 3 stepped out to help The Kempwood Civic Association become more aware of recycling efforts in their neighborhood.

Alumni Reflections

We at Monarch are fiercely proud of Alyssa Thompson, Monarch graduate, who is having great success in college, and continues to stay connected to us. Last year, she presented Monarch with a beautiful ceramic butterfly that she had created in her college pottery class.
