Monarch Head of School Honored at Astro’s Game
A large contingent of her fans gathered on Disabilities Awareness Night at Minute Maid Park on August 10, 2010 to cheer for Dr. Marty Webb, Founder and Head of The Monarch School, as she received the EP Maxwell J. Schliefer Distinguished Service Award. The award is sponsored by the EP Foundation for Education, Inc., MassMutual Financial Group and League of Dreams.

Dr. Webb received the award in recognition of her competitive spirit and efforts on behalf of the disability community. She was excited to receive the award, but was quick to point out that Monarch is a big team effort of faculty, parents and students. “It was an honor to represent ALL of the people who have made The Monarch School a truly unique place and program,” said Dr. Webb. Monarch Welcomes New Director of Admissions

We are delighted to announce the hiring of our new Director of Admissions, Audrey Omenson. Audrey has worked with children, adolescents and families for over six years. She holds a B.A. in Psychology and an M.A. in Psychology as well. While completing her graduate degree, she interned in our Challenger/Voyager level Executive Functions pod under the supervision of Dr. Tara Devine and loved the unique environment of Monarch. Having had that opportunity to get to know Audrey and the quality of her work, we are delighted to now welcome her as Monarch’s new Admissions Director.

Cutting Edge School Project!

The Monarch School has a new partner! Thanks to a community effort, we are now working with the Scrollsaw Splinter Group - of the Woodworkers Club of Houston – who are providing coaching, mentoring, and ultimately overseeing the production of 125 wooden butterflies that our students have cut. These butterflies will be used as the center pieces for our Miracle Makers Morning Breakfast and will be offered for sale that morning. Visit our website for the rest of the story.

The World’s Best

The Society for the Performing Arts (SPA) has been “Bringing the World’s Best to Houston” for over 40 years, and now they are collaborating with The Monarch School to bring these offerings to our students! Throughout the fall and spring semesters, professional dancers, musicians, writers, and actors will be coming to our campus to share their expertise with Monarch students.

Masterpiece Mentorship

Did you know that great artists throughout history can help you become a better photographer? On Tuesday, September 21, four professional photographers visited a Monarch Challenger level class to teach exactly that lesson. Like Da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Picasso, photographers use artistic properties such as perspective, framing and light to create photographic masterpieces!

Visit our website to find out more about these generous professionals and the great work they did with our students.

Stop and Smell the Coffee!

Many of our wonderful parents did just that at Monarch’s annual Parent Volunteer Sign-Up Coffee. Held on Wednesday, September 15th, our terrific Parent Volunteer Coordinators – Carey Handley and Robbie King for Challengers/Voyagers and Julie Schwartz for Novice/Apprentice - were terrific hostesses to an energetic and receptive group. Capital Campaign Update
We are out of space! The vision of helping more families means the rest of our campus needs to be constructed. We began fundraising for the second classroom building, The Butterfly Building, in June and already generous donors have contributed nearly $1.25 million! Visit our website to read more and find out how you can help.
Parents Drive Creativity
Earlier this school year we lost the use of one of our old friends, our 1999 Suburban that had been donated by our friends, Penny and Richard Weiss. A plea was sent out to all parents and friends of Monarch for any assistance they could provide to replace this vehicle. A wonderful family, Dana & Toby Ewing (Trevor’s parents) came up with a very creative solution. They are allowing us to use their leased 2011 Tundra (brilliant red!) until June 2011. Visit our website for more on this story and the vehicular generosity of other friends of Monarch through the years!

Hooray for Libraries!

On the morning of Wednesday August 25th, Monarch welcomed Kathy Carmichael, librarian from the Hillendahl Neighborhood Library. Kathy offered her expertise to help parents get Houston Public Library cards for their children. Her services were very popular – folks were lined up waiting for their turn! Kathy has been a long-time fan of Monarch. She will soon return to the newly renovated Ring Library on Long Point, where she looks forward to seeing our students and helping them use the many resources available there.
