Hurricane Harvey Alert

Dear Families,

I hope this email finds you safe and dry. Thank you for your patience as we have navigated this storm in an effort to put the safety of all first.

We plan to open tomorrow, Wednesday, September 6, 2017.  This long break away from our students has been difficult on all and some normalcy will indeed be good for us.  It should be noted that the City of Houston Public Works and Engineering is still working on resuming operations of the West District Wastewater Treatment Facility so Monarch will be implementing efforts to reduce water usage that impacts the wastewater output.

We will welcome your students and adult learners at a delayed start time of 9:00 AM. This will give faculty the opportunity to arrive safely before the students and adult learners arrive, and it will allow our faculty time to be as prepared as possible. School pick-up will be at the usual program times.  Starting Thursday, we will follow the normal start times for all programs.  As always, safety is our most important concern, and if you feel that you need to take more time in returning to school, please do so.  We will look forward to seeing you and your student when you deem appropriate.

SOME ADDITIONAL IMPORTANT INFORMATION:

Happening in the Monarch Center Wednesday, September 6th:

Tomorrow, the Monarch Center will be set up to support families at drop off who may choose to wait at the school instead of traveling back to their homes.  We recognize that you may have school age children with you due to ISDs that are not yet open. All family members are welcome to use the MC as a resting place.  Kyle Nguyen will have computers and printers available for families who need a place to work, etc.  Additionally, the Monarch Parent Group will be present in the MC to put into action the Families-In-Need Program designed to assist families during challenging times.  The Monarch Parent Group will have two surveys available for those who are interested (one for those in need and one for those who wish to help).

Monarch Meeting Dates:

There are important dates/meetings listed below that must be rescheduled.  We regret doing this, but with all of the turmoil caused by Hurricane Harvey it is necessary.  Please know we will reschedule as soon as possible and you will be notified.

Additional Monarch School Harvey Outreach:

The Monarch School and Institute has teamed up with a newly formed group of dedicated citizens to support families who have children with special needs who have been affected by Harvey; Greater Houston Autism Coalition (GHAC).  GHAC has teamed up with Make It Fit in Waterville, Ohio, a nonprofit organization that has reached out to Houston families offering support.  Make it Fit is heading to Houston and will arrive Thursday, September 7th to deliver needed supplies specifically for Harvey affected families within our special needs community.  Monarch has offered The Monarch Center as one of several Field Offices where some items will be dropped off for families to access. If you or others you know who have needs, please inform them that Monarch Center will notify the special needs community when items arrive and share the plan for pick up. Parents, if you are able to volunteer, we might ask for your help on the day of delivery.

Monarch Make-Up Days:

Regarding the missed days, our leadership team is in the process of determining how we will schedule opportunities to make up the missed time. More communication will come out soon regarding this.

Please, stay tuned. We will have more specific information for you very soon.  As always, Monarch is honored to serve families in need.

Sincerely,

Patti Pace Head of School and Institute
