ReelAbilities Film Festival Houston 2015

The Monarch Institute is proud to continue supporting the ReelAbilities Film Festival in Houston for 2015, and will co-host a screening of a mental health-focused film at Monarch Center on Tuesday, February 10, 2015.

This evening show will be co-hosted by the Houston chapter of the National Alliance for Mental Illness (NAMI). The film to be shown, Here One Dayis a visually arresting, emotionally candid film about a woman coping with mental illness (i.e., a bipolar disorder), her relationships with her family, and the ripple effects of her suicide on those she loved.

“ReelAbilities is all about raising awareness about the potential for people who are differently abled to make meaningful contributions to our communities and society. This year, the films shown will again reflect a broad sampling of content, with a focus on issues such as overcoming negative perceptions, capitalizing on strengths, and building resilience through efforts to connect with and understand those who are different," said Dr. Bryant Shaw, Monarch Diagnostic Clinic Director.

Partnering with NAMI has allowed us to shift focus toward affective disorders for this year’s festival, and that topic and the way Here One Day explores it has great relevance for both our communities. The entire lineup of films and activities is so exciting for 2015,” said Dr. Debrah Hall, Head of School and Institute for The Monarch Institute for Neurological Differences.
